After studying in the Czech Republic, artist Simon CHANG stayed on in Europe, basing himself mainly in Slovenia to work on his art and in commercial photography. The focus of his early work was to photograph the realities of life in the fringes of society. In recent years he has turned to photographing ordinary scenes. This piece, titled The First, shows a newborn calf that Chang saw one morning at a farm in the Slovenian mountains. The calf’s newborn fragility stirred his memories, so he added extra elements to the photos: the first shoe his daughter walked in, crosses from his first religious ceremony, and his first library card from his elementary school days. Chang adds meaningful objects to ordinary images to create simple yet profound life symbols.
