Lightness, Remembered: Hair Salon is one of a series of works by artist Sim Chang, focusing on scenes with a sense of humanity and history. This work was shot in a traditional family-style barber shop, a common scene in the daily life of the older generation. All kinds of things in the store seem to be scattered everywhere, and the female boss with a friendly smile is cutting the hair of the main subject, who recalled the sleek figure of his own mother, who had been a hairdresser: every movement seemed to him to be a performance. Before he entered high school, she would cut his hair, so that afterwards, whenever or wherever he had his haircut, the place would seemingly transform into his mother’s hair salon. The main subject, sitting high in the barber’s chair, has his face replaced by an electronic screen with his childhood portrait, through which we can see his mother’s handiwork. By combining old portraits and new photos of old scenes, Sim Chang makes beautiful memories of the past reappear in the present, and shares these strong emotions with viewers.
