Lightness, Remembered. Matsu New Village.

Matsu New Village is part of Sim Chang’s Lightness, Remembered series, in which the artist photographs scenes redolent of history and invites the residents to share their memories and stories of the place. This photo was shot in Matsu New Village. One can see that the old doors and window frames have been repainted bright red, but some old, still-intact window frames are set nearby, showing that this is an old building. This shows the sitter’s grandfather and his home; the many toys beside him symbolize his wonderful memories of childhood. The original residents of Matsu New Village have moved, so for this shot permission first had to be received for them to return to this location, which is so full of memories. As in the rest of this series, an electronic screen showing the subject’s head and face in childhood replaces the actual, current head. This allows the viewer to interpret and evoke the past within the present.
