CHANG Che-Jung’s photographic works focus on the animation and manga culture, adopting a director’s perspective that reflects upon the modern society. Gundam Girl shows a girl holding toy guns standing in a living room filled with Gundam models who seems to be immersed in her role of cosplaying a historical character. However, her face was deliberately replaced by a computer screen displaying an anime character. This work is typical of CHANG Che-Jung’s approach in contrasting the real versus the virtual worlds, natural versus artificial, and the past versus the present in order to reflect upon modern lifestyles that feature vast material wealth yet offer little in the spiritual sense. The artist reminisces about earlier societies of Taiwan in an attempt to contemplate the historical position and role that could be played by the modern generation.
