CHANG Che-Jung’s photographic works focus on the animation and manga culture, adopting a director’s perspective that reflects upon the modern society. Dragon Quest is based upon the Nankunshen Daitianfu Temple in Tainan. The background is dominated by a dragon-shaped building. A girl stands before the massive dragon as though absorbed in her role of cosplaying a historical character. However, her face was deliberately replaced by a computer screen displaying the face of an anime character. This work is typical of CHANG Che-Jung’s approach in contrasting the real versus the virtual worlds, natural versus artificial, and the past versus the present in order to reflect upon modern lifestyles that feature vast material wealth yet offer little in the spiritual sense. The photographer attempts to investigate the emptiness experienced after joy in order to contemplate the historical position and role that could be played by the modern generation.
