CHANG Che-Jung’s photographic works focus on the animation and manga culture, adopting a director’s perspective that reflects upon the modern society. Chun-Li shows a girl lying in front of an arcade machine placed in a storeroom with cans of spray paint strewn about, immersed in her role of cosplaying a retro character. Part of her body was replaced by an anime picture shown on a computer screen. This work is typical of CHANG Che-Jung’s approach in contrasting the real versus the virtual worlds, natural versus artificial, and the past versus the present in order to reflect upon modern lifestyles that feature vast material wealth yet offer little in the spiritual sense. The artist reminisces about earlier societies of Taiwan in an attempt to contemplate the historical position and role that could be played by the modern generation.
