Once when Wu Mei-Chi was riding an elevator, she found a suction cup stuck on its wall. It turned out that the security guard was using it to hold his ballpoint pen for signing his name during his round. In her mind, Wu quickly analyzed the light effects of the suction cup, and this became the initial impulse that led to her selection of this material. From the transparency of the suction cups and the light-and-shadow effects on the patterned glass, to the perspective produced by the long, staggered lines between the suction cups, the objects are drawn away from their original practical purpose, leaving only the pure beauty of their forms. By controlling the light effects, the shape of the objects are further transformed. When deconstructed, distorted, and deformed in this way, ordinary material objects take on the surreal aspect of something in science fiction. When we place Wu’s work in the darkness, only a little light is needed, and unexpectedly we find that every work seems to glow on its own. Wu uses “dye sublimation printing” technology to maximize the color saturation and make the imagery sharper and more vivid.
