Mixing a bunch of unrelated objects into a harmonious work requires a pair of curious, childlike eyes. Each series of the artist Wu Mei-Chi’s works show her obsession with certain materials. In her YXX—The Flares series, the most conspicuous thing is cheap plastic articles, such as hairpins and and plastic tubes. She often visits flea markets or second-hand charity stores looking for materials. When creatng, she needs to set up the scene first, then collage the Mixed media, and photograph the still life. Along an axial line, she created an infinitely stretched-out space before the camera. Using the refraction and reflection of a large amount of light, as well as the principles of mirroring, she controlled how the space spread, and the distorted light rays record the malleability of time. She confirmed Einstein’s theory of relativity with an alternate technique: space is full of paradoxes, and may be compressed and distorted like jelly.
