The artist Liao Chi-Yu, who does her creative work with video, is good at using role-playing and scene-setting to explore delicate feelings at different levels of life experience. The Fruit Enchanted was shot using the methods of setting up a studio and imitating the hand-painted background screens that were used in old photo studios. These lushly poetic backgrounds use rich colors, classical painting brushwork, with human figures that seem to have come from the theater, thus presenting a unique atmosphere. The video images show a mother and her son, who do not live together. The mother is a movie star, and the son sees movie clips of her performances, thus shuttling between the reality of his mother’s absence and the clips of her performances. The wide variety of memories and emotions displayed by the real and virtual images of his mother become the clues and connections for understanding her life experiences. The audience can also open up their imaginations through the video images that lace together reality and fiction and bridge different times and places.
