Tseng Mei-Chen is devoted to wood engravings. After incising fine lines into hard wood, she can produce delicate patterns that express unlimited changes in complex compositions. Using only black and white, she can express the world with its vivid light and shadow. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world, Tseng Mei-Chen was living in Italy, which was severely impacted. During the summer, when she was able to go out to the beach for a short time, she saw the rocks of the long breakwater on the Mediterranean Sea shore in their long struggle against the crashing waves. She then produced this work, La Riva. The rocks in the breakwater seem to make a simple composition, but when you look closely, you will see their complex, dark-pitted details. Between the black and white, the artist feels that even though the pandemic has highlighted human fragility, we human beings are still like the stone breakwater, using our strong willpower to fight the virus, so that we can return to the bright sun one day.
