TSENG Mei-Chen uses wood engraving printing to create a series of carved landscapes. The artwork Landscape of Words – Twins shows two similar coastal landscapes with steep rock surfaces. Inter-changing patches of black and white portray changes in light and shadow, creating a vastly different yet symmetric landscape and presenting two different life forces. The artist combined the conceptual forms of Chinese pictographs and stripped the outlines of the landscape to its unadulterated forms to represent the forces and artworks of nature as well as the mysteries behind Chinese calligraphy. TSENG Mei-Chen molds natural forms and words as well as eastern and western philosophies to create a relationship between external elements and personal self and between virtual and realistic elements.
