Barren Mountain Green

“A world in a flower, a buddha in a leaf, in everything there is life,” is a core creative concept in the artist Kang Tien-Wang’s works. A hint of green in the bare mountains, leafless branches of winter, vibrant flowers blooming in green thickets, Kang Tien-Wang focuses on the present and depicts small, seemingly insignificant lives. This is the winter scenery near San Francisco. Slender lines cover the earth, and a single bare tree stands alone on the mountain, forming a triangle with a butterfly resting on a red flower and a snail slowly creeping on the ground, leaving a winding trace behind. This forms the focus for the composition. Kang Tian-Wang has recorded the snail’s path, but at the same time he has recorded the passage of time. The butterfly will spread pollen, just as birds will eventually spread seeds, which are the catalysts of nature’s life cycle. Kang uses embroidery-fine brush strokes with acrylic paint to depict the grass, and even the randomly scattered white stones show that they too are in a state of pressure and change. All these forces of life appear amid the brushstrokes.
