HUANG Bo-Hao’s work, Untitled (Gold Foil), continues the presentation of material and formal concepts from his series Lian Dan in 2017. He chooses cinnabar and gold foil, the two kinds of materials with an oriental ink concept. First, a smooth surface is drawn with cinnabar. Then, the gold foil is applied accurately onto the surface of the painting in the order of left to right and top to bottom. Lastly, an agate knife is used to produce the reflective property of the gold foil. The golden image expressed with mainly gold foil corresponds to the abstract form of Western monochrome painting. The specular nature of the gold foil has the contingency of light refraction. The singularity of the material links the pure thinking of oriental ink. HUANG Bo-Hao integrates the characteristics of the body, time, space and material, and explores the concept of time and space under the oriental philosophy.
