HUANG Chin-Hua’s Self-portrait series are based on stone. Detailed and meticulous observation of stones as well as overlapping circles have been combined to construct a sparse yet densely packed composition. Self-portrait No.13 depicts the texture of a particular portion of a stone upon a purely white canvas. Automatist techniques have been employed to consciously direct the pen to slowly extend and expand upon the natural beauty of rock formations. HUANG Chin-Hua has used brushstrokes as well as smudges to create diverse changes in the dryness, wetness, and darkness of the ink to create a world scattered with sands or shrouded in mist. By using repetitive circular movements, HUANG Chin-Hua searches for a means to unleash her innermost emotions and discover the unknown secrets lurking deep within her mind. Her flowing strokes are combined with her unworldly and unrestricted mind, underlining the uniqueness of her artwork and skills.
