The theme of HUANG Chin Hua’s series Self-Portrait is stone. With a close eye on the smooth texture of stones, the artist uses fine brush strokes and a layering of circles to construct his finely detailed piece. In Self-Portrait II, Huang begins with a stone and gradually extends it into the beauty of a rock’s structure. With black/white, dark/pale, and dry/wet alterations in ink, she creates a visual appeal and reveals the rich texture of stones with their lines and crevices. For Huang, the stones in her paintings are no longer just stones but a further depiction of herself. Through the repeated drawing of circles with her hand, she gives expression to her experiences and state of mind through the course of her life, while she models a portrait of the inner self.
