HUANG Chin-Hua began developing the “Self-portrait” series in 2009. From observing the surface texture of stones, Huang uses small writing brushes to draw circles or semicircles, and through different brush techniques, the artist displays the changes of tonality and dryness of ink, creating a world that seems to be loomed over by sand storm or mist. The work not only showcases the fun of closely observing stones, but also uses the stones as a mirror to reflect the inner thoughts of the artist, turning the paintbrush into an antenna that explores the unknown spiritual world hidden deep inside the artist’s mind.
