ISA Ho employs the language and techniques of photography to bring our focus upon the impact of social values upon modern lifestyles and explore how people in the modern world deal with their own existence and construct their self-identity. From 2009 to 2013, ISA Ho created the Girl Series that uses falling-style (upward-looking) photography, describing how confused identities and uniformity of social values have led to feelings of defeat in contemporary society. Girls – Sophie, Joanne and Marianne was taken when ISA Ho lived at an art village of New York, a city that was regarded by its residents as a dark and gloomy. Despite these negative connotations, New Yorkers have decided to stay. New York is thus similar to the cake depicted in the shot. Despite being grossly deformed, the colors and flavors have remained as wonderful as before. ISA Ho believes that every change and setback experienced in life allows us to create a more unique approach without changing our original state of being.
