Artist HO Isa examines the effect of social values on modern people by using the vocabulary and techniques of photography to explore the self-identity that they build and live within. In Carousel, the artist dresses herself up as a bride, a teacher, Snow White, a fashionable urbanite, and a pregnant woman, metaphors for the many roles women play in today’s society in a quest for self-worth. But along with each role come social expectations and responsibilities, and it’s hard to avoid falling into a lost, contradictory state of mind. The artist is saying that if we can transcend conventional values though supreme courage and can achieve deeper understanding and self-identity, it would be a true turning point for women in realizing their self-worth.
