In PENG Hsien-Hsiang’s Weed in the Yard, a withered stem stands upright, rising from a cluster of green leaves on the ground. The desiccated branches contrast strongly with the leaves, sparking curiosity about the relationship between the two: is the tuft of leaves proof that the wilted plant is dead, or does it represent hope of rebirth? When creating this piece, Peng didn’t make a preliminary outline; instead, he created the entire scene from scratch with his brush in one go, seizing upon the intuition and perception of his inner being as he strove to convey simple, primitive yet elegant meaning through succinct, abstract artistic terms.
