Artwork Appreciation
What Are We? by CHANG Teng-Yuan is inspired by Gauguin's work "D'où venons-nous? Que sommes-nous? Où allons-nous?" in 1897. Gauguin expressed his views on life and art through self-questioning. In this work, CHANG Teng-Yuan presents the texture of various mountains and stones with bright colors using traditional landscape layout and brushwork. In the middle, an unknown object is covered with a white cloth, and only part of its legs are exposed. It is connected by wires to more unseen objects with skull-like plants by its side. Through the work, CHANG Teng-Yuan asks a question related to the development of contemporary technology, and invites the audience to imagine and think "What are we?"
