Artwork Appreciation
CHEN Shiau-Peng excels at taking life’s sensory experience as a starting point to construct geometric abstract pieces with rich and varied visual effects by laying out flat geometric color swatches incised by white lines. My Scotland - 4M Series is a group of works that the artist developed while an artist in Scotland. The artist first used the customary forms of his favorite abstract artists—Malevitch, Mondrian, and Martin—and then created his work by matching the colors and forms he absorbed while in Scotland, those of the sky, whisky, kilts, and the highland landscape. Chen uses symbolic local colors to create his abstract paintings, simple and restrained in color and shape. This painting is a reflection and summation of Chen’s life in Scotland as a painter. He also attempts in this work to explore the profound meaning of “abstract art.”
