Artwork Appreciation
HSU Ming-Ren uses self-made charcoal and hand-made paper to deconstruct and recombine scenes within his memories, transforming them into one mystical, spiritual poem after another. In Wind and View IX, Hsu repeatedly applies charcoal to coarse paper, presenting the form of mist-shrouded mountains. In the image, the layering and tones of the charcoal create a misty landscape, and the splotches and marks left by the paintbrush are like life worn away by the ages. What Hsu depicts here is not just a landscape; it is also an acknowledgment of life on the move.
