Artwork Appreciation
CHOU Tai-Chun uses drawings and illustrations to reproduce our modern world. His works serve as a reflection on the use of art to create visual imageries that returns to the media world, conveying the idea “illustrations are a form of media” in an effort to create a novel interface for dialog. The theme of his work, Globe Silent 033 – The Landscape in Short Time, was inspired and based upon a news photo of the 11th March 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan. In the composition, lines and colors were used to create movement and flow, hinting at Taiwan’s changing landscape caused by shifts of our terrain and loss of our vegetative cover. The 17th inch screen next to the scenery depicts a similar scene on the left half of the picture, communicating a flattening world achieved with the establishment of the virtual network. In this series, CHOU Tai-Chun attempts to invoke the viewers’ memories and achieve physical intervention during art appreciation to highlight the contention of time and development that he had personally witnessed.
