Artist HUANG Wei-Min was born in Puli, a beautiful town where the forces of development and environmentalism have been at loggerheads for years. In her 2008 series Devouring, she focuses on the topic of development. This painting is from the series.
In Devouring, a wooded mountain in a dark, murky environment has mutated into a quietly lurking monster. Huang is telling us that nature seemingly bears human needs and greed with silence and grace, but as damage accumulates over a long time, nature will retaliate one day with the ferocity of a wild beast.
