Artist Sun Pei-Mao views “artificial landscapes” as intriguing cultural artifacts. Complex spatial arrangements, like those of a theater, can create a unique atmosphere. Delicious Cuisine draws inspiration from the artist’s experience of dining at a Japanese restaurant and is a fascinating extension of his “Wandering in a Garden Series.” Sun Pei-Mao recreates the exquisite table arrangement of his experience, but this time the sashimi boat features savage octopuses and crabs. To the left, a toothy shark bares its teeth. The sliced swordtip squid on the rock bed wrap the pine trees with their tentacles, creating a landscape. The table laden with abundant food is set against a backdrop of pavilions, towers, rock formations, and small bridges, all reminiscent of Chinese gardens. Behind this surreal scene, a figure dressed in traditional Chinese costume pours tea. Sun Pei-Mao only drew the figure’s mouth and nose, so that it is impossible to get a full glimpse of the figure, prompting speculation as to whether this mysterious character is a glutton or the ruler of this fantasy world.
