SUN Pei-Mao’s works portray bizarre settings that respond to the ephemeral and isolated sense of life. Garden of Sacred Beats shows a lavish Chinese garden and a red-colored theme. The garden is filled with a collection of sculptures of strange beasts as well as couples walking or playing chess in the scenery. SUN Pei-Mao’s works are montages and fixed frames from a video that evoke the viewers’ imaginations. The landscape is combined with a superficial and vulgar artificial environment, generating visual distortion and contradictions within the image. Surreal and irrational spatial elements are used to create another projection of realistic scenarios from real life.
