Artist Sun Pei-Mao’s work is imbued with a cinematic, dramatic intensity. He channeled childhood memories of commuting into this station setting. A man sits in a chair, eyes closed, seemingly resting. Behind him, a large mirror reflects the platform, where an express train sits stationary, waiting for passengers to board. Sun Pei-Mao loves movies, and his compositions are deeply influenced by them. In each frame, he invites the viewer to construct the plot of the next scene. Sun Pei-Mao was born with color deficiency, so colors that are not saturated enough will appear blurry to him. Therefore, he often uses strong contrasting colors in his paintings. He is aware that his perception of color differs from that of most people, so his grasp of color is very rational. He does not paint the world that is intuitive to his eyes. Every stroke of color is the result of careful reasoning, which makes his works exude an uncanny sense of splendor.
