Artist Hsiao Pei-I’s recent work focuses on the theme of “The Transformation of Disaster.” Through printmaking, foiling, and painting, she explores themes of life and death and human nature, revealing the shifting emotional states of humanity in the face of disaster. In this triptych, Paper Dreams IV, she employs plants and paper cranes to create the composition. The white, flower-like paper cranes embody the dual imagery of red spider lilies and hope. The artist’s placement of the plants and cranes in the composition allows the three parts of the composition to function as independent paintings or as a single, larger-scale work. The foil backdrop behind the plants, seen from a distance, resembles a corner of a large full moon, with the paper cranes seemingly soaring above. The overall color palette is subtle and natural, exuding an almost meditative tranquility and echoing the Japanese aesthetic of mono no aware.
