Artist Chen Nien-Tzu’s ink paintings present the concept of emptiness through ink lines and color blocks, wandering between nature and abstraction. Once she was in a canyon and felt the mysterious power of nature clearing her head and freeing her from the shackles of habitual thinking. She does not deliberately conceive or lay out stories at the beginning of her creative process, but completely allows herself to be led by her inner strength, using the techniques of automatism to let the pen and ink operate naturally like flowing clouds and flowing water. Chen Nien-Tzu is not obsessed with the pursuit of form and image. In her work Wave, she uses the simplest brushwork without fancy techniques to depict the image of “a flower that is not a flower” in the center of the painting. She uses dense, complex ink lines and very slow pacing to carefully outline the images of nature in her heart, and hopes that the viewer can return to his or her own quiet inner world through her work.
