Artist Chen Nien-Tzu often meditates in the wild, or by mountain streams, freeing her mind and naturally drawing the energy of nature, which she puts into her paintings. Chen used what she considers to be the purest natural media—brush, ink and water to create Grain Rain, which shows a slow but natural rhythm. The lines in the picture are free and smooth, and the short brushstrokes are smoothly combined on the rice paper, expressing the idea of a meditation in her heart. The rain-like vertical lines on top are carefully left blank to bring another dimension to the picture. Finally, small drops of water are used to create a layered ink-color effect. Chen Nien-Tzu puts aside all the art theories she learned and transformed the moments of inspiration she finds while meditating in nature. The inner scenery she created bit by bit in her painting lead the viewer back into her quiet inner world.
