Artist Hsieh Mu-Chi once exhibited this work with Southeast Asian elements at Art Jakarta 2019. He looks for things related to Indonesia in his daily life as inspiration. From the staghorn fern varieties that grow in his home and in Indonesia, to the F-16 fighter jets that are part of the air forces of Taiwan and Indonesia, to the pepper abundant in Indonesia, he has included them all in his paintings. For him, the staghorn fern symbolizes family, the fighter jets signify national defense, and pepper is a local characteristic—these things reflect his imagination of foreign cultures and reflect his own identity and growth background. Hsieh Mu-Chi tried to stack various elements to create a balanced and aesthetic picture, and used water-based pigments and acrylic ink to lighten and fill the picture. The specially selected canvas is made of glue-treated greige fabric, which allowed the pigments to be stacked layer by layer. This resulted in better color development and a unique atmosphere of bright and grayish tones.
