The “Blue Criminal” series has been the core of artist Hsu Can-Lin’s long-term creative development, and he has a clear explanation for it: “Time is like a criminal, we cannot feel it, we can only observe it through its traces, and mend all the memories that time has taken away.” He once saw an old utility pole covered with tangled, climbing vines, but road reflectors and monitors were set up on it, which seemed to him to exude a strong sense of loneliness. He depicted it in creating his work, Monologue. The huge billowing clouds in the indigo sky seemed to herald imminent heavy rain, and the standing telephone pole glowed with a faint yellow light. Hsu captured the moment of the clouds with a camera, then used the overglaze technique to layer and build up the abstract texture of the clouds formations. Time seemed frozen in that moment, but as he used polishing techniques to partially erase the color, it was like pressing the “Play” button on the video, allowing the time to move forward again, seemingly triggering a temporal paradox.
