In the history of art, there are many works that lament the passing of time, reminisce about the past, and explore the meaning of time itself. In Hsu Can-Lin’s Blue Criminal-ECHO, can you notice what time has taken away? The painting depicts a scene from a gloomy, depressed town. An entire row of simple sheds in the center is swallowed in black shadows, and the plastic cloth on the wall facing the viewer glows slightly with indigo blue light. The orange and pink sky is cut in pieces by telephone poles and messily crisscrossing wires, and the one of the mounted loudspeakers is turned like an eye staring fiercely at the viewer. Hsu Can-Lin uses a special glazing technique of classical oil painting, in which thin layers are brushed on top of each other to the point that a lustrous effect is produced. The scene is silent, so any echo we might hear comes from our memories.
