The artist Liao Zen-Ping, who is skilled at producing realistic paintings, often captures scenes from life through photographs, which he then uses as creative materials. In his Curtains and Mirror–2, Liao depicts a modern Japanese interior. On one side of the room, a floor-to-ceiling window to a balcony is open. The light, gauzy curtain is blown in the wind, but the heavier green one hangs still; these are both reflected in the mirror. Liao Zen-Ping has said that in the perspective of Western art history, curtains play the role of distinguishing the real and the unreal. The work is approximately symmetrical around a vertical line in the center, where the dark green curtain blocks the viewer’s sight. The viewer will then look toward the window on the right or to the mirror on the left. Liao did his best to make the painting as smooth as possible, with no brushstrokes visible, and he used colors very close to those of the actual objects, or low-saturation colors, to reduce the traces of artificiality. He thereby explored the different viewing experiences that realistic paintings can bring to viewers.
