An Unfamiliar Afternoon is Yen Chun’s record of a sense of unease that he felt as he approached his old home after an absence. He positioned the reed flowers at the center of the painting, almost as if he were painting a portrait, and used the “overlay” technique to stack the layers of oil and glaze so that it would exude a soft white sheen in its solitary, quiet space. Even though the gray-green tone suggests “rationality,” a sense of alienation from the environment is formed. Yen Chun believes that the choice of creative media is related to the artist’s own habits and environment, but oil paint, as a medium that can be layered on slowly and repeatedly, is more in line with his personality. It is conducive for engaging in a continuous dialogue with his works. The completed work reflects his relationship with the plant as he was painting it.
