In a break from the traditional documentary style of photography, the artist Hung Shih-Tsung has developed a distinctive subtractive photography, which draws its creative inspiration from his experiences growing up in the countryside and from traveling. In this work, Colorful Pinglin Under the Sun ”WP_15_25_34”, we first notice a banana tree—a common sight in Taiwan’s countryside. Behind it a rope stretched between two doors is used as a clothesline for hanging many articles of colorful clothing to dry. Below, there is an overturned wheelbarrow, the kind often filled with wet concrete on construction sites. It turns out that these are temporary shelters built by construction workers living in the suburbs. Hung Shih-Tsung removed the contextual background from these elements to reveal their essential qualities. The scene further leads the viewer into imagining it from different angles: one wonders what kind of field these objects had originally appeared in, and what kind of aesthetic viewpoint it can inspire.
