Since 2016, photography artist Hung Shih-Tsung has tried to break away from traditional documentary photography and develop a unique “subtractive photography” style. In Consciousness Follows the Visual Image: Pompidou, Paris A00_1668_1453, he juxtaposes two photographs that he took in the streets by the Pompidou Museum. He removed the background, which had included the façade of the building, the ground, and space around it, leaving only signs on the wall, the stanchions and red ropes, the ticket counter, road signs, seats, pedestrians, and a few weird shadows. Hung believes that photography’s value is not limited to its recording function, but also lies in its creative aesthetics and composition. The picture can also be preserved with a further step of direction or choreography, so that it conveys more meaning. By leaving the objects and figures as visual symbols on a blank background, the ubiquity of symbols and human feelings within an urban setting are brought to the fore.
