Photography artist Hung Shih-tsung’s creative works often come from his own rural background and from travel experiences. In his Colorful Shiding Under the Sun: “A00_7046”, he removed all of the background elements from a photograph that he took of the mountain town Shiding. He removed the houses’ walls and retained only their roofs, the various anti-theft iron window bars common in Taiwan, the clothes hanging out to dry in a town square, and the shadow of a tree. The retained elements are set against a blank white background, but still in their natural positions. Hung Shih-Tsung believes that photography not only has documentary value, but also includes the techniques of choreography and directing, keeping only essential elements in the composition, where they are endowed with beauty and soul. When they are freed from the constraints of the space normally surrounding them, the viewer’s imagination fills in their reality and existence and imbues them with the aura and beauty.
