Hung Yu-Hao’s artworks are closely related to the living spaces of Wanhua District. The context for the creation of Patroller II echoes that of his earlier Patroller. While Patroller had used aerial photography to show the streets where the deity, the King of Qingshan, makes his tour of inspection, Patroller II uses 3D scanning technology to capture Wanhua’s shops, pedestrians, crowds of worshippers around the god’s tour of inspection, and ceremonial personnel, all converted into a digital dot matrix. These computer highlights are then combined into cloud-like images. After it is illuminated through a light box, viewers can see the lively atmosphere of Wanhua, built up through a point cloud, as the King of Qingshan tours his domain. Moving through the camera’s perspective, the audience is drawn into the festival’s space. The “patroller” not only represents the festival participants, but also embodies the artist and audience as they circulate through the district’s core of belief and culture.
