Yeh Tsai-Wei’s creative themes revolve around remembered scenes and projections. She is adept at using the media of Oriental painting such as Eastern gouache and ink to gently depict images full of delicate emotion. Meteor is part of a series that Yeh started in 2017 and is inspired by the famous Japanese novelist Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows. A passage in this long essay on Japan’s aesthetics relating to darkness and shadow describes a golden folding screen, and Tanizaki points out that such a screen in a bright place would seem only more vulgar and glittery, but in a darker place it would glow with a more elegant, dreamlike beauty. Yeh uses the material properties of the metal foil to present the meteor’s glowing trail in the atmosphere, and even though the meteor glows brilliantly in the darkness like a firework, it is still hard to grasp, and it leaves infinite space for the imagination.
