HSU Ming-Feng’s works integrate panel art, woodblock printing, and painting techniques in order to create a richly textured composition. Memory 2 recreates the ancient cities, stone caves, and settlements that the artist has witnessed during his travels. Powerful chiseling marks were made on the wood, creating a primal yet natural texture upon the material. Thick layers of paint were then applied across large areas of the artwork in varying degrees of chaos and order to create an ever-changing layer of deep, somber colors. Hidden within the colored layers would be images of ancient cities, with the tattered textures serving as the marks of time that people had left within. HSU Ming-Feng’s artworks include an elaborate portrayal of subsumed emotions, transforming landscapes from his memories into an internalized and abstract portrayal of inner sensations.
