PAI Mu-Chun is skilled in oil painting. Despite using realistic brushworks, the special composition of her works and clever arrangements of color tones provide a surrealist atmosphere. In Butterfly, a long-haired girl is shown covering her eyes with her hands. Corrugated metal fences at the background reveals the scene to a construction site, but unexpected greenery appears in the form of banana leaves sprouting from the girl’s back like the wings of a butterfly ready to take flight. The background is a collage of mutually and naturally mixing, overlapping, and flowing areas, creating a richly layered yet detached visual sensation. PAI Mu-Chun believes viewers would be able to engage in different visual dialogs with the artist’s creative vocabulary and symbols and generate new meanings and discoveries. Such realization helps us to reflect upon our everyday surroundings and to observe things with greater curiosity than before.
