DONG Hao-Yun is skilled at creating a virtual scene with geometric shapes. Using contrasting dark/light color hues, he creates a “conversation” in the painting between the abstract and the concrete, seeking added possibilities for artistic expression. Nocturne III portrays a serene and somber environment. Vertical and horizontal lines were used to delineate geometric blocks and dissect the entire canvas. The complete work has a brooding and lonesome tone. Contrasts between dark colors and bright shades create a realm of subtlety that emphasizes the spatial layouts of the entire canvas. DONG Hao-Yun’s technique of combining space ingeniously combines two scenes that differ both in time and in space to present an image of unreality. In the perceived rhythmic movement of the partitioned painting the thick layers of oil paint stand out, as does the creative style of the artist.
