DONG Hao-Yun's forte is building virtual scenes with geometric shapes and using a contrasting dark/light color palette, bringing the abstract and the concrete elements into conversation on the canvass is search of more possibilities for artistic expression. In Mooring, the artist cleverly uses vertical and horizontal lines to divide the composition and create the painting's overall structure. The left section of the painting is dark and cold and at the bottom there is a small boat moored on the shore. The space occupied by the right section is warmly colored, showing the ocean. These two contrasts create a sense of movement, giving the painting a spatially fresh appearance. DONG Hao-Yun uses the organization of space to cleverly combine two spatially different scenes together to create an artistic conception of unreality, letting the play of light and shadow on the divided canvass show the richly layered oil paint as well as the individual artist's style.
