DONG Hao-Yun is skilled at creating a virtual scene with geometric shapes. Using contrasting dark/light color hues, he creates a “conversation” in the painting between the abstract and the concrete, seeking added possibilities for artistic expression. In this piece, Indoor – Outdoor, the artist ingeniously uses vertical and horizontal lines to partition the canvass into two areas, shaping the structure of the painting. The right-hand side projects a gloomy and cheerless feeling, while the left-hand space with a block of warm orange color projects a bright and complex image. This contrast builds a feeling of rhythm that renders the space on the canvass more clear-cut. DONG Hao-Yun’s technique of combining space ingeniously combines two scenes that differ both in time and in space to present an image of unreality. In the perceived rhythmic movement of the partitioned painting the thick layers of oil paint stand out, as does the creative style of the artist.
