In SU Yu-Lan’s Winding Water Slide, the scene of a moment in time is described in the brisk, bright colors of a summer’s day. In the center of the picture is a drained swimming pool. A crude, winding waterslide penetrates from one side of the scene and terminates at a smaller pool, in which there’s an inner tube surrounded by splashes of water. Su constructs a multi-layered spatial sense from partitioned blocks of color. The static and dynamic scenes are interlinked, creating the sense of the passage of time. By destroying the boundaries of the canvas, Su recreates dynamic visual memories, preserving lingering reverberations of time and space in this piece.
