In A Distant Place (6), SU Yu-Lan captures a scene passing by while traveling by vehicle. In this piece, all the elements, including the silent ocean in the background and the passing tree, exhibit a transient, blurred appearance due to motion. In the lower part of the scene we see the roof of a building where rainwater has collected into little puddles. Above it, a stretch of azure sea takes up most of the painting, with thin, breaking waves adorning its expansive surface. Su distills this image from her travels via an emotional filter, recreating dynamic visual memories in such a way that the elements in the painting tell the story of a certain instant in time.
