Artwork Appreciation
CHANG I-Yun’s Still employs simple composition and professional command of brightness and shadows to transform a closeup shot of an architectural structure into a montage of clear-cut patches and lines. Vast oceans and horizons blend into each other in front of the building, creating a blurry effect commonly seen in ink paintings. The sea surface reaches as far as the eyes could see, silently spreading into infinity. The feelings symbolize the beginning of hope as well as the conclusion of numerous thoughts and ideas. CHANG I-Yun used black and white photography as well as the serene and infinite atmosphere of the ocean to reflect the tumultuous state of her mind as she faces the future.
