Artwork Appreciation
NIU Jun-Qiang's work is skilled at explaining the essence of existence. He started with the concept of "relationship", from something small such as the subtle connection between people, to something big such as the consciousness of life within a group, trying to transcend the historical dimension and ask detailed yet grand questions. In his work, Nei-Guan, the five-framed picture presents five injured body parts; these special wounds are called Stigmata, and the locations are consistent with the five wounds where Jesus was nailed. The wound appears on the devout saints and is a testament to their loyalty of faith and a sign of redemption. NIU Jun-Qiang combines the belief symbol with the meridian system in Chinese medicine, engaging in an attempt of juxtaposing objects and symbols.
