Artwork Appreciation
Artist Niu Chun Chiang’s Untitled-4 is a painterly photographic work that aspires to describe “the feeling of God’s presence.” The abstract lines and forms in the photograph were made by placing a sculpture made of tracing paper under gentle sunlight, and then using the camera to capture the color of the sunlight falling on the paper, which presented no end of ever-changing appearances. Light allows us to sense the world around us, and Niu Chun Chiang, having a very high sensitivity to light, was able to capture a gentle and pure abstract vision, a metaphor for the divinity and transcendence within people’s hearts, under a soft springtime afternoon sun. Through the multiplication of light and material, pristine and abstract visual experiences are created, showing pure, joyful, and intuitive feelings.
